Hydroponics
Today we went around (we being my child development class) to a bunch of organizations in Yonkers. This picture was taken at "The Science Barge" which is a really neat, totally self contained (except I don't believe that), gardern. The vine plants hang on these poles near the ceiling of the greenhouse, and just hang. The melons look particularly silly, just hangin' there.

Hanging tomatoes is a fairly common way of growing them in small spaces. I considered doing it myself by I had no where to hang them in enough sun.

self-contained probably doesn't include water and definitely wouldn't include sun. But I imagine they compost.
